Set against the backdrop of current politics, the Debatable Forest looks at the ever-changing relationship between Scotland and England. The project examines two decades, experiencing the highs and lows of European Independence, Scottish Independence, General Elections, Debate, Political Blunders, and the Changing Modern World. The programme takes two villages on either side of the border, Nookfoot and Alberig. With the villages holding opposing political opinions, the architecture aims to facilitate debate between the two communities and offer space for reconciliation.
The project aims to reimagine the way of designing architecture using parameters and data to directly inform the design. The base for this is a projection of the future of Scottish politics. Culminating in a graph over twenty years, the graph geometries then directly manipulate the base plan away from the ‘normal’. By 2042 a total of 14 modules will have been constructed on the site, with each specifically catering to the political landscape at the time of their construction. Ultimately, the project brings the fast pace of modern-day diplomacy back to basics; the slow and steady construction of two buildings comes together to form a single debate forum on a localised scale.
