The Multiple Garden Houses

Project details

Programme
Unit UG9
Year 3

The Multiple Garden House, or houses, is a mixed tenure social housing scheme located in the centre of Welwyn Garden City. The project is an alternative scheme for the site which is currently under construction with a large high-rise development that is widely considered not in line with the Garden City Principles.

The design for the Multiple Garden House involves a single module that could be repeated and terraced within the scheme, with the module itself containing three separate units. The three units were designed to cater to three different types of households: one being a young couple or single person; the second being for a family; and the third a disabled access unit.

The project aims to produce a mixed tenure social scheme that uses the Garden City Principles to create a better quality of life for its residents whilst adapting modern social housing ideas to develop the Welwyn Garden City model. To do this, the scheme centres around green space. Residents all have access to private roof gardens – private green space being a value of a garden city – as well as semi-public gardens created between modules to encourage a greater number of interactions and sense of community. The result is an expanded Welwyn Garden City, which meets the demand for new housing but improves, rather than degrades, the quality of life.

The section cuts through two modules and their shared garden. The façades of the modules are stepped with planters to add more greenery and feed the ‘worm bridges’.

The plan shows the ground floor of the module, cutting through all three units. In the middle is a semi-public garden that is shared with the module opposite.

A detailed moment of the module’s the façade and the worm bridge. The worm bridge is a stepped pathway for worms and other wildlife to reach the garden roofs, increasing soil quality.
