Individuality Amongst Sameness is a design project of 2000 clay pieces made around the theme of ‘sameness’. Originating from the topic of ‘paradise’, the project investigated sameness in relation to utopia vs. dystopia, socialism, working with different media, making processes, and individuality. This design investigation seeks to find the middle ground between individuality and sameness. When looking closely at these clay circles, one notices the marks and features that make each piece unique. This handmade installation exposed that individuality is what stands out most in a sea of sameness, mimicking the relationships people have with each other in reality. Sameness provides us with a sense of community and brings us together, while individuality allows us to exist as our own person within these communities.

The intention of producing and displaying these infinite clay circles is also to unite people around the world through the process of making. By coming together in the same activity of making these clay circles, individuals will hopefully unite across lockdown in these difficult times, regardless of their location, and feel a sense of community.
