'The natural world is, in engineering terms, a thoroughly analogue realm of endlessly variable waves of sound and light, temperature and pressure fluctuations, and shifting magnetic fields.' B. Feder, New York Times 2004
The world as we know it, is not digital. In Studio 1.1 we want to blur the boundary between the analogue and the digital world - crafting new building typologies that question how we make in the future, combining craft and computerised production. ‘Health, Safety, Environment and Craft’ are our priorities in Studio 1.1. We wish to ensure that even the most dangerous activities can be conducted in a safe manner that enhance and improve our environment. We consider how the most terrifying situations(!) in the circus environment can be made safe through design. We consider the full life cycle of the circus act, how it can be repurposed, re-cycled or even composted? We ask what is the environmental message that is incarnate in the design and how does the circus pavilion inform us of the risks, dangers and mysteries that lie ahead.
After completing the pavilion, we also developed an iteration capable of collecting waste from the Thames River while simultaneously welcoming people to relax inside.
