Living Building / Lived-in Building

Logged between the Olympic site to the East, the new hipster territories of Hackney to the North, and the new ‘London Vernacular’ housing developments of Fish Island to the South, Hackney Wick appears to be still left behind by gentrification, still resisting the social cleansing that make rents for local workshops and artists unaffordable. Located on the borders of the Borough of Tower Hamlets and outside Hackney, it feels like it doesn’t know where it belongs. Being part of what Peter Ackroyd calls the ‘Stinking Pile’ the area has never been part of the real London; but it seems to have always tried to carve its own path on the fringes of London. This special place is disappearing fast, and very soon the grain that defines it and the smells that identify it, are disappearing - taking with them a rich tapestry of intertwined stories and fading memories.

The building projects by the MSci students are set around Hackney Wick. They are responding to issues identified from our annual theme of Climate Change.

Students take on real issues and respond in their architecture to urgent social issues of the wider Hackney Wick area. The building proposals attempt to integrate the community and allow for an inclusive approach to the creation of space.

The Hackney Lightwell, Dominic Nunn

The Hackney Lightwell, Dominic Nunn

The Hackney Lightwell sits in a narrow alleyway space wedged between new and old buildings of industry in the centre of Hackney Wick. The programme was inspired by the shared experience of having to merge your work-life with your home-life during lockdowns in the recent pandemic. The Lightwell serves as an interstitial congregation space which brings commuters together to a space designed through the temporal connection to sunlight. Through shared spaces for relaxation and cooking the aim is to provide a space which acts as a hallway house between the homelife and work life, and fosters relationships between commuters and their wellbeing.

A Work Cafe during Covid 19, Yutong Tang

Based on the initial site analysis on view study, geographical location, traffic flux and the interest in the emergence of novel work/lifestyles due to the pandemic, this project explores how Covid-19 influences the way people work/study. The project considers how buildings might respond to Covid-19 by investigating highly ventilated and hierarchical spaces. In response to climate change, the design tries to maximise the use of sunlight and natural ventilation to reduce the use of operating energy, and mainly uses CLT (a zero-carbon renewable material) for construction.

The Hackney Agora, Alannah Nethercott

By reimagining the Ancient Agora model in the context of Hackney Wick, this project looks into how a semi open-air building can facilitate communication and the activities surrounding public discourse within a community. The project aims to encourage and expose conversation around issues pertinent to its diverse population. An interest in a layered porosity allowing for varying visual and acoustic entrance grew from initial observations of the site and the varying visual density created by the overgrown vegetation.

Transitional Courtyard, Leroy Ming Ma

This project is about a transiting courtyard space that aims to be an attractive place for the local community in Hackney Wick for socialising. It provides flexibility to become a fully functional workspace for locals to work and stay connected with the community. The project explores the relationship between the courtyard and the peripheral spaces through spatial qualities, tectonics, experience, and luminosity.
