Kindness is in being able to forgive, in order to secure the ideal of peace. The story of humanity is one filled with the atrocities of authoritarian regimes. Many cities are now ashamed of their history. Perhaps, when their idealism is centred on the surreal notion that humans would be capable of ensuring lasting peace, new urban forms and phenomenological implications can be birthed. For the city of Vichy to repent its French Collaborationist history, the project places idealism at the centre of the table as with Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’. The invitation of allegoric attendees: Philippe Pétain, Jean Moulin, Marine Le Pen, the City of Vichy, Gérald Darmanin and the French press, indicates a moment at which political differences are abandoned to give way to communality, at least for a while. The metaphor of the table operates at three scales to allow the city to engage in a surreal architectural conversation about peace and kindness; the table cultivates orange trees that sit over the authoritarian conversation—embodied by the existing French formal park. When the wind blows, a scent of oranges might wash away the putrid smell of Collaborationists crawling in the city.
