Love, marriage and divorce have significant impacts on the development of the built environment. China’s accelerating divorce rate has become a destabilizing force in its society. Can the Great Wall of China, which served as a powerful national defence infrastructure in the past, once again protect the familial and social stability of the country? Taking inspiration from Marina Abramović and Ulay's ‘The Lovers’ Great Wall walk, couples contemplating divorce embark on a pilgrimage along the wall to reflect on, even possibly reconcile, their differences. The reimagining of the Great Wall is an homage to Chinese family values, but also a criticism of the wall’s history and the old feudalistic mindset. Although the Wall metaphorically encourages a sustaining of the marriage, it also supports divorce through its key exit points. The conceptual lines and materiality of the new architecture captures a fragility in, and the high-maintenance nature of, marriage. While a single line might be easily broken, weaving them together creates resilience and strength, a metaphor of a healthy marriage. This bittersweet architectural story of kindness would have an enormous impact on China's future built environment, and simultaneously, it offers an alternative perception and social appreciation of historical monuments.
