The New Liberty of the Clink Prison

Project details

Programme
Unit PG12
Year 4

The life cycle of a bird follows an exact, ordered pattern. Its actions are not mindless rituals but follow the rhythms of nature. On the other hand, our lives often seem very monotonous. Locked away living sedentary, inactive lives, we don’t feel the seasons changing as time passes on and passes away. Everything slips by in a blur to the artificial rhythms of the day. Of course, some of our habits are beneficial; they shape our lives and structure our time. In a life rich with repetitiveness, a habit can become a beacon and an anchor, so what if we actively observe the natural world around us as a part of our daily routine?

I propose to reintroduce the Liberty of the Clink in the same position as the jurisdiction boundary of the Palace of Winchester. A contrived shimmering-neon micro-climate, where darkness reveals lost rhythms in sedentary human existences, stimulates the behaviour to rewild London. Condemned prisoners guilty of environmental wrongdoing by the Court of the Clink lead a primitive existence in their communal, autonomous garden complex. The objectives are personal desistance, empowerment of synanthropic avians within their delicate urban ecosystem, and the consequent realisation of mutual fulfilment besides natural affinity.

Oblique Elevation of Fragments

A view peering into the Liberty of the Clink over a period of fifty years. Permanent pieces of infrastructure are labelled ‘Figures’, while planned acts labelled ‘Scenes’.

The Liberty of the Clink Elevation

The light quality within the Liberty grounds is tailored towards the prime environmental characteristics needed for avians.

Ultraviolet Vision

Birds have an ability to see UV wavelengths (300-400 Nanometers), an area of the spectrum to which humans are blind. They also see a much larger visual field than humans.

A Prison Cell-Tower

The tower houses four inmates convicted of similar crimes. The model is built using spruce, mount-board and balsa wood.

Tower-Cell Modularity

Exploded isometric drawing of a typical cell-tower.
