Nogyo, Vertical Farm

Project details

Programme
Unit PG20
Year 4

As of 2019, the food self-sufficiency ratio in Japan has greatly decreased. Japan also has the highest proportion of elderly citizens in the world as 33% of the Japanese population is above the age of 60, whilst 25.9% are aged 65 or above. The ambition of the project is to design and construct an innovative bamboo tower that will be used for vertical farming. With consideration to the environmental and societal issues in Tokyo, the vertical farming project aims to increase food production using bamboo, a carbon negative material, as the primary structure. The overarching theme of the project explores the bamboo tower as a prototype of many more innovative towers that will be erected around the city of Tokyo owing to the declining population. This project tests a proposed building that will aim to integrate the existing farm of “Honisshiki 2nd” into the Bamboo Vertical Farm Tower, the development of an innovative use of bamboo as a primary structural material.
