Parametric Heritage

Project details

Programme
Unit PG21
Year 4

The project engages concepts of pattern languages, data mapping, and auto generative architecture towards forming a parametric heritage system for the development of 28 hotels. After recognising the current preservation and planning policy failures within Dungeness, resulting in growing gentrification and the loss of the local community, new auto generative methodologies of preservation are proposed. A series of ‘datascapes’ with accompanying conditional statements have been established from less tangible data sources, such as flicker geolocation and informal building boundaries, forming a mnemonic reinterpretation of suburban behavioral traits. The composed data is remapped as tangible inputs controlling a parametric diagram, outputting different architectural interpretations for each unique site location. The result is an uncontrolled grid of micro hotels. Each hotel, regardless of identical diagrammatic guidelines, results in a distinctive compositional arrangement forming a mnemonic remnant of the once vibrant Dungeness community.

The Parametric Diagram

The parametric diagram determines the initial hierarchy, proportions, interrelationships and qualities of spaces in each node. The formed grasshopper definition has enough leeway for each space to generate unique qualities.

Parametric Output

Parametric Output

The parametric model outputs a family of 28 unique compositions with traces to the predetermined diagrammatic constraints.

Layered Membrane Façade

Uncertain outcomes of the model suggest lightweight structural systems. A layered membrane (steel mesh netting) is used. Densities are optimised by an evolutionary solver, balancing light with excess solar gain.
