London’s Night Time Economy (NTE) is one of the most vibrant in the UK. However, many of its workers have been marginalised, neglecting much of their welfare and well-being. The Midnight Communes is a pilot program located in Marble Arch by the Night Time Borough Commission. It is designed to not only provide support for the NTE workers but also introduce a platform to empower them and engage with the public for a better work/life balance. Through the design of lightweight pavilions with systems of inflatable roof structures, the Midnight Communes would provide resting and social spaces for a variety of NTE workers throughout the City of Westminster.
The project aims to explore the different experiences of time through the night, related to materiality, social interaction and personal emotions. Despite being an infrastructure, it also acts as a potential template for other similar NTE locations throughout London.
The auditorium serves as a platform that allows for public discussions for neighbourhood and Night Time Economy matters. It also houses the offices for the Night Time Borough Commission.
The Driver’s Shelter is designed for cab and bus drivers that take their breaks in the area. It provides a space for them to socialise away from their isolated working environment in their vehicles.
The Late Night Canteen aims to serve the workers from the neighbouring department stores as they are not often given catering services. The Canteen also allows for the public to use this space when in Marble Arch.
The Shower House provides opportunities for workers and the public to relax. It includes shower spaces and a complimentary foot bath and is located at the entrance that overlooks the Marble Arch islands.
Providing a unique dining experience, the Hanging Balloon is a restaurant that allows users to not only view the Communes at a height but they can also help fund the operations of the Communes through dining here.
