Mirrors of Society is a temporary and experimental reduced version of the UK parliament, in essence a new typology of debating chamber to host the parliamentary duties during the renovation of the Westminster Palace. The project is an invitation to rethink our institutions, their traditions, rituals and the buildings in which they are accommodated.
The building is integrated within a park, where public and private circulation are intertwined to promote engagement with politics through the act of walking. Inspired by feminist theories, Carlota explores how parliamentary architecture can be a mirror of society and questions which society does the current building address. Focusing on the idea that when parliament was built there were no female politicians and many of its spaces are outdated, the project envisions a more inclusive space for both the public and members of parliament.
The scheme is designed to be experimental and temporary. Although these attributes can be seen as unstable, Carlota proposes to view the ephemeral as demanding for action.
This video reflects upon the consumption of the streets and the male gaze, who is the city for? As the observer sees the city as a spectacle to be consumed.
Video proposing experimentation instead of a replica of the commons chamber when reallocating the members of parliament during refurbishment.
The site is a fictional pedestrian extension of Parliament square. The current traffic system makes Parliament square hard to access. The goal is to extend the public realm of the city.
Chamber composed of fragmented spaces, which control the environment. Only the chambers in use are heated. The building is user-sensitive by being at human scale. It comments on the scale of the surrounding buildings.
