The Kitchen Garden aims to support an alternative approach to food and nature in an urban context, providing local elementary school children with the most optimal environment for their physical and mental wellbeing.
Located in London, the site is characterised by a steep topography, the vicinity of train tracks, and its inaccessibility to the public. The design is driven by a rigorous material approach, following the maximisation of local materials such as reclaimed brick, local timber, and earth from the site.
A crucial aspect of the brief is to fulfil the mission of the client, GROW–an organisation that works with children on deepening their relationship with nature through a curriculum focused on agriculture, mindfulness, and physical wellbeing.
The project addresses the brief by featuring an outdoor kitchen and a terraced landscape where the children can learn how to be in touch with nature, even in an urban context. The project focuses particularly on the development of the Children’s Building, dedicated to mindful creativity.
The project is told through the eyes of the children who inhabit it, in order to centre the design around their needs and desires throughout the whole process.
