Learning above London / Aprender encima de Londres

Project details

Programme
Unit UG10
Year 2

The project investigates the use of space above the London streetscape as a viable space. Here this theory is applied to the programme of a London satellite department for the Central University of Venezuela’s (UCV) International Relations department. The form of the project takes inspiration from the informal developments of Caracas, Venezuela, and their relationship to terrain. Out of necessity, these developments are made of small interventions which closely follow the contours and leave minor alterations to the land upon which they sit.
Like the developments of Venezuela, this project’s activities are split up into small architectures which fit into the space between roofs and leave little, if any, lasting impact on the existing structures. The public and private spaces are distributed to promote interactions and movement between the different user groups.

The project suggests a solution to the crisis of space which many global metropolises such as London or Caracas are grappling with. Air rights design is applied to the programme of an educational institution, but the theory can be applied to housing, healthcare, or industry.

Presence on the Streetscape

Learning brings to light the imperceptible. Glowing orbs above terraced houses alert the pedestrian to activity above the streetscape.

Grafton Way

Private spaces for staff and students, interspersed with public rooftop piazzas. Air pocket provides space for sound dampening and thermal energy transfer.

Whitfield Street

The department's lectures are all public. The library is 2/3 a book exchange, refreshed with documents regarding South America which provide easy access to knowledge for all.

Traversing the Roofscape

At street level, the structural system is hidden from view; pedestrians will see the life of the programme through its open corridors and glowing volumes.

The Grand Reveal

From the street level the design peaks over the terraced houses; inside the development the structural system is revealed.
