Beisbol Barrio

Project details

Programme
Unit UG10
Year 2

The Polyrhythms brief is interested in cultural cross-pollination between Venezuela and the United Kingdom. The Beisbol Barrio is a rooftop baseball club insertion, inspired by research into urbanism and sports in Caracas. For Project 1, a calisthenics (body weight training) intervention was proposed in the unplanned settlements of Venezuela–known as ‘barrios’–which lack amenity spaces such as sports enclosures and public squares. Further research into Venezuelan urban acupuncture and sports typologies informed the proposal for a ‘club de beisbol’ on top of the Fitzrovia roofscape on Grafton Way. A ‘club de beisbol’ is a baseball training ground typology that is ubiquitous in Venezuela. Sports and physical activity are important to young people–particularly from underprivileged backgrounds–in the formation of aspirations, friendships, and discipline.
