Since our educational spaces are manifestations of structural inequalities, the provision of practical space, resources and community can create a platform for fostering greater educational equity. These territories set borders that are defined more by power and politics than merit. This determines and cyclically remanufactures racial inequality. The Latin American Student Centre explores how architecture can be used as a tool to narrow the attainment gap at UCL.
The building is part of the institution's pledge to invest equitably in students’ futures. It consists of one main centre and many small architectural satellites dotted around the UCL campus, with the aim of encouraging knowledge transfer and creating communities with representative role models for students. The design language of the proposal revolves around a rectangular module, where each unit is available for appropriation and students are encouraged to use it as a framework for adaptation. These modules allow for a resilient system of iterative evolvement for the building and community. Equitable structures for higher education will work to confront and redress the institutional norms that sustain white privilege and permit the ongoing subordination of minority groups.
