This project proposes an archaeological research centre and museum for the Gobëkli Tepe ruins in the Urfa region of Turkey. The project looks towards facilitating a curious gaze into the past without obstructing or changing the vitality of the ruins. Playing with the temporal uncertainty of archaeological intervention, the spaces imposed on site will embrace remnants from both on-going excavations and re-discoveries. This will build on previous investigations into the citadel of the ruin in Project 1, in which layering histories and recontextualising the unknown and forgotten below were brought to the surface. The project proposal builds on these insights to revel in our ever-changing understanding and reframing of our past. The architecture proposed at Gobëkli Tepe will help archaeologists curate and spatialise history.
The proposal offers the opportunity for remnants to be revitalised and remembered, whilst also embracing the possibility of forgetting and thus re-contextualising a temporal lens.
