The urban fabric of the City of London has been constructed over time around the remnants of the London Wall. Some of these fragments lie preserved but forgotten, adjacent to skyscrapers and within car parks. This project takes the stance that urban development should not simply rely on physical barriers and people's sense of responsibility to protect the London Wall but should also integrate it into future proposals for the city.
The programme for the building is a conservation centre and exhibition gallery for Roman artworks and artefacts. The project investigates how assigning functionality to the London Wall could promote its active engagement with the daily life of the city; it is hoped that this in turn will lead to better maintenance and protection in the future. This does not mean that the London Wall’s historical heritage attributes are completely abandoned; the traces of time it carries are still the most important aspect of the project, but it is hoped that through renewed functionality the London Wall will be brought closer to people’s emotional consciousness.
