The site was originally home to the British Embassy, located in central Bangkok; a heritage home nestled amongst skyscrapers and luxury shopping malls. Today, the area feels detached and exclusive to a specific group of the elite. Carrying forward ideas of cultural symbolism and collective memory from P1, the project aims to create a space that represents Thai culture, where different communities can come together regardless of their background.
There is a Thai saying that ‘rice is the backbone of our country’; the building programme is a rice museum consisting of an educational area, research laboratories, hair spa, and tasting area. The design is a celebration of rice as a means of survival, a cultural artefact, as well as a building material–a time capsule of Thai culture to be carried forward through future generations.
The building is designed with a variety of local materials, with roof forms inspired by the local vernacular.
The rice tasting area operates like street food. The layout is inspired by traditional housing, with seated dining areas on the lower floor and food served on the upper floor.
The upper floor bridging provides views of a rice field to one side. Views down are partially obscured by a sculptural rice straw; the open floorplan gives the walkway a rice aroma.
