Hydro-Botanical Bath House

Project details

Programme
Unit UG2
Year 2

The River Brede runs parallel to the Bath House, separating it from the saltmarshes that stretch out towards the beach. In the next 50 years the sea will submerge all of this, as well as most of Rye’s outdoor public space.

This building adapts to take in and embrace incoming water from 2050 tidal flooding. This intake is filtered using hydro-botany, forming gardens that double up as a social space. Within maintenance the building monitors changing water conditions.

The structure responds to the return of Rye’s old coastline, using the view of the transitioning landscape to get inhabitants to question object permanence and anthropocentric views of buildings as ‘defying nature’.

Regenerating Stilts/ Kerplunk

Currently, building in floodplains increases flooding due to non-absorbent land. These structures explore how we normally remove damp and instead embracing it.

Post High Tide

Tiered changing cubicles are staggered towards the river, inspired by the ‘Hanging Feet Houses’.

The Moorings

With the future increasingly digital, we spend less time in naturally interconnected spaces. The building uses biophilic qualities to create an ethereal, yet physical, space.
