The Dungeness B Recommissioning Project

Project details

Programme
Unit UG2
Year 3

In the context of rising sea levels, coastal settlements and most nuclear power plants around the world are at risk. The project focuses on recommissioning the existing Dungeness B Nuclear Power Station to integrate the existing local community and preserve the authenticity of an area that will slowly be submerged.

The power station is a landmark of Dungeness and an important part of the landscape. With its decommissioning scheduled for 2028, however, the site will be returned to shingle, producing huge amounts of waste in the process. The project addresses this–an approach that accords with the general theme of ‘reusing and recycling’ already present in Dungeness. The building will use emblematic parts of the power station as a starting point for a community-based proposal that includes housing, a library, and art spaces. Two 35 m tall art galleries will be accommodated in the existing drums of the station.

The decommissioning of the nuclear power plant extends over decades, and the project therefore focuses on reducing the time required to make the site inhabitable for humans. This will be made possible through the introduction of controlled radiation-absorbing vegetation growth into a steel beam structure attached to the existing elements of the station¬. This structure will subsequently support the building proposal.

Construction Stages

Construction Stages

The video highlights the elements of the existing nuclear power station that will be kept as a base, as well as the main construction of the stages of the proposal.

East-West Section

The section cuts through the library area and the art gallery above, highlighting the cast glass elements in these spaces.

Close-up Section through the Library and Art Gallery

The library consists of a reception and information desk, toilets, reading and discussion rooms, and outdoor seating and terraces.

Interior View of the Reception

Cast glass is used as an atmospheric and functional material, creating new spaces as well as changing existing spatial qualities within the building.

The Building in a Flooded Landscape

The image shows a view of the decommissioned power station in a few decades’ time, with the landscape of Dungeness fully submerged due to sea level rise.
