The Municipal Textile Mill

Project details

Programme
Unit UG3
Year 2

The project’s programme of a textile mill is located in the Kypseli neighbourhood of Athens, Greece, where the past decades have celebrated the cultural diversity from multi-ethnic immigrants. The programme contributes to the fabric manufacturing that could aid this diverse community of local shops and markets. In response to the brief, the topic of racism was explored through a comparison of modern-day racism with that of Ancient Greek ‘protoracism’, which argues that climate changes behaviour and that those characteristics lead to discrimination and segregation.

This programme is attentive to the varying environmental conditions required for certain machinery and fabric processing. Concrete and glass are explored in conjunction, looking at how fabric formwork can contribute to displaying a storyline of time whilst also infusing colour. The project symbolises a cultural unity where the etymology of the Greek word ‘histos’–meaning ‘weaving/cloth/material’–and the Latin word ‘texere’–meaning ‘to weave’–could explore a narrative to create fluid, continuous spaces.
