Dancing With the Wind

Project details

Programme
Unit UG3
Year 3

Freedom of expression has been one of the many struggles of young Iranians, and the authorities have specifically made it difficult for female dancers to perform in public or at social gatherings. This project aims to cross certain boundaries and confront the limitations that exist in Iranian society.

The building programme is a cabaret, inspired by the pre-revolutionary lifestyle in Iran. A show is performed in front of the Iranian embassy in London, teasing the idea that the act of dancing–which is feared greatly in Iranian society–is taking place so close to them. Inspired by Shahre Farang peep boxes, there is an opening at the back of the stage which faces the embassy, inviting the diplomats to watch. Certain elements of the building also dance with the wind, inspired by the 1000-year-old windmills of Nashtifan. The building is surrounded by a landscape of dancing windmills, which allows the building to assist the performance.

Ground Floor Plan

The plan shows the circulation of staff and the audience around the building, with a separate exit for the audience to avoid overcrowding.

Short Section–Orchestra Pit Detail

The section illustrates the relationship between the cabaret and the embassy. The detail shows how the orchestra pit can become a second stage, with people sitting outside.
