The Weavers’ Theatre proposes a learning centre that spans over a prop making workshop and theatre. The site, located in Shoreditch, London has a rich history connected to the weaving and crinoline industries. The building draws inspiration from the site’s history, incorporating elements into both the functional and aesthetic elements of the building.
Using a guild-like style of learning–with mentors being assigned an apprentice–the building aims to place the craft of prop making and costume design as the main theatrical performance during the day. At night, students will be able to showcase and use the props they have created, staging their own plays in the theatre. The building thus stitches together its own theatrical show of craft as well as showmanship.
The façade’s elements showcase the different functions within the building whilst breaking the elongated site into a scale/rhythm that responds to the neighbourhood.
A market for the community residents to gather and meet.
Different routes in the building.
The weaving wall doubles as a vacuum system in the workshop. It collects dust but also allows students to engage with the prop makers on the other side.
An empty market becomes the theatre’s portico at night.
