The Great Andaman Fishery

Project details

Programme
Unit UG5
Year 2

This project was first inspired by the Sentinelese tribe’s maintenance of a delicate equilibrium with their habitat by rigorously following their indigenous lifestyle. The concepts of isolation and observation were applied to the nearby dwindling Great Andamanese tribe and reimagined in the context of a 21st century architecture. Building a visible junction between the pre/post-Anthropocene represented by the tribal people and the modern people, the project explores how experiencing tradition through architecture can remind us of the Symbioscene.

Fishing is a fundamental practice amongst the Great Andamanese tribe, combining their religion, craftmanship and culture. This project takes fishing practice as inspiration for a community space. The project addresses the communal fish market from an international perspective, encouraging an approach that sees nature and culture running in parallel. While staying true to the traditional Andamanese practice of fishery and philosophy of communal intersection, this project examines the possibilities for implementing alien techniques of craftsmanship to enhance the learning experience for visitors to this aboriginal culture. This building aspires to become a paradigm shift for the Andamanese to return to such traditions through the repetition of the processes of learning, practising, and disseminating their sustainable cultural practices; finally becoming a beacon of a new Symbioscene.
