The Aral Cathedral

Project details

Programme
Unit UG7
Year 2

The project takes place in the year 4021, 1500 years after the fall of the last great Aral ‘Giant’, a lost civilization that designed their architectures to move and retreat with the rapidly rising sea levels surrounding the Aral Sea in Central Asia. Unbeknown to many, the fabrication of these Giants and their technological advances in locomotion influenced human culture and religion. Today however, due to the loss of information and the shift from the literal and functional meaning of these Giants to the aesthetic and symbolic, much of their influence has been lost to time.

Now, after the unearthing of new and largely intact archaeological remains of a fallen Giant, a new group of sectarian religious scientists have attempted to revive the worship of the Aral people by re-animating the newly discovered relic, in order to reconnect us with its functionality and true meaning. A monumental structure is built to analyse, display, and pay homage to the Aral peoples use of materials, anthropomorphic proportions and, most importantly, their acoustic language.
