The project regenerates the Margate Lido complex, focusing on three local social issues - poor local economy, ageing population and loneliness. The lido site is converted into a market and a public exercising area. Getting inspired by the idea of adaptive reuse and the forms created by sea waves, the majority of structural members of the old lido are reused for the proposed market and undulating jogging track, which also forms the roof for the complex. The building aims to increase tourism to Margate, helping to support the local economy, whilst also creating more connections between people experiencing loneliness and isolation and the wider local community. Moreover the public exercising area is expected to encourage an active lifestyle and social interaction for Margate’s ageing population.
The building forms are inspired by the waves and tidal markings on the beach to the North.
Axonometric demonstrating the relationship between the existing Lido complex and the proposed design for the site.
The existing building is carved deep into the chalk cliff, providing unique spaces for the new building to inhabit.
The proposed building spans across all four levels of the existing building, reimagining the spatial arrangement and reintroducing daylight into the cavernous basement level.
The reception hall light well brings natural daylight into the space deep below ground level and is structured with radial steel elements supporting glazed panels.
