Greenwich Bazaar

This project aims to address employment disparity within Greenwich by introducing adaptable workshops and market stalls that encourage and support small businesses. The project responds to the heritage of the building by the theme of structural disassembly and re-using key elements, such as testing the coal bunkers for redundancy, removing columns, and re-using them to support the workshops within the main engine room frame.

A playground space has been developed to compliment the workshop stalls, providing a change of scenery and a place of creative interaction within a passively designed internal environment. Using the power station’s incredible height, photovoltaic panels have been positioned on the boiler house roof, powering the workshop spaces alongside a water source heat pump, symbolically replicating the coal arriving by boat. The workshop spaces lock into their ducts; however, each module can collapse and be transported by the repurposed engine room crane.

The proposal aims to be flexible and ever-changing, to respond to the changing needs of its inhabitants.

The Adaptable Workspaces

Adaptable workspaces and stalls dependent on the stall owner’s needs. Ensuring collapsibility for transportation by existing crane.

Greenwich Bazaar’s High Street

Recreating the high-street with adaptable workshops and stalls, within the pre-existing engine hall.

Greenwich Bazaar

A view into the varied spaces within; with workshops and stalls filling the gaps of the old boilers and engines.

Journey through the Bazaar

A section through the power station, walking through the different halls and environments.

The Bazaar Playground

Depicting the coal bunker repurposed as a playground. Climbing structures mount the inclined edges, with additional fabric landing spaces and seating.
